If you had told me back in 1990 I would someday live on a farm in Maine, raise goats, and hand-craft soap and body care products, I would have told you "You are nuts!" I was firmly planted in suburbia, working in Boston, MA, and dreaming about buying a brand new house where nothing EVER had to be fixed; I grew up in an old farm house and was sick of fixing things.
A good friend of mine met a guy whose family had a place in Maine. For some reason, she kept spending weekends up there. I reluctantly agreed to a visit. "Oh yuck," I thought...bugs, mud, and forests. I knew I was going to hate it. I arrived in Georgetown around sunset and caught my first view of the Maine coast where the Kennebec River meets the Atlantic Ocean. "Huh, not so bad" I thought, Okay, it was actually spectacular.
For the next 15 or so years, my husband and I searched Maine for the perfect piece of property. Eventually we convinced my sister and brother-in-law to be a part of the plan. We found the farm, we bought the goats, and a year later, Almost Edible Soaps was born.
Oh, and now, not only are we fixing the farm-house, we are fixing the barns too! Wouldn't have it any other way....
